1/8 - KB Swings and Sweat

Was still sauna like when I left work and headed to the box tonight but I was in a shit mood and feeling the need for a solid workout.   Best form of therapy ever is a good crossfit WOD.  I lose myself in that moment where the rest of life falls away and I am just fully present, pushing, struggling, working, releasing.  It was a good night.

When I arrived Brando was sitting outside the locked door to the box and as we chatted I heard my phone – it was Match, caught in traffic.  Uh-oh.  Those who know Match know that this is very unusual and with a bit of mix-up in communication, etc. he was going to be a bit late for class – and he was the coach.  Oops.

Thankfully the spare key is at the desk in Revolution and he had me open things up and start the warm-up.
There were only 6 of us so it was quite fun.  That being said – I do the warm-ups every day, I know what we go through but suddenly when needing to guide people through it I struggled with what to do.  I started to think too much about the movements in the WOD and how to warm up for them that it confused me more than anything.  That being said it really was fine.  A run (no surprise), leg swings (usual), some bear crawls (shoulders), some lunges (legs) and then Coach Match arrived – only 5 minutes late.  Never saw those 25 burpees get done though!  Haha.

We proceeded through some more warm-ups with empty 8kg bars and my shoulders were hurting from that.  It was cute to hear Kara complaining about how heavy it was feeling because I felt the exact same way.  Uh-oh.

We were all big sweaty messes by this point too, it was H-O-T!

Strength
5 RM strict press

18-23-28-30.5-33(PR)-35.5(f)

Happy with this.  My previous 5RM PR was 28kg not too long ago and given that my shoulder feels better now than it did back then I was sure I’d get more than that.  I was happy with 30.5kg but it still felt fairly easy.  33kg definitely did not – the last rep was not at all pretty – my right arm pushed up first and dragged my left with it.  Still got it done though.  I figured I’d try 35.5kg for one rep to see if I could get it but didn’t come close.

WOD
21-15-9-15-21
Double-unders
KB swings (24/32kg)

7:12 Rx

This scared me a little.  There was a 10 minute cut-off and more than that, the KB weight was H-E-A-V-Y! I knew I could swing 24kg but hadn’t done it in ages and that was a lot of reps to get through in a fairly short time.  I strapped my hands up again like I had for t2b knowing that KB swings are also likely to make my hands tear especially since they were feeling sore already.  I did a few warm-up swings with the 20kg and then with the 24kg – needed a half swing to get the 24kg overhead while warming up too.  Then suddenly the clock was beeping and we were off.

The DU’s went fast in all rounds, I managed to do them all unbroken then stared down the KB.  Somehow, every time I picked it up I got it straight overhead for the first rep.  There were a few times that I popped with my hips so much that the KB actually went over my head.  It wasn’t pretty and I’d lose my rhythm but it felt good to know that even when tired I still had the power to do that.  I broke the rounds up as follows:

21: 11/10
15: 8/7
9: 5/4
15: 6/5/4
21: 6/5/5/5

This worked for me.  I would pick up the KB with a set number in my head and go for that.  I also tried to relax my grip as best I could as I could feel my forearms getting pumped – this worked a little bit but definitely still had bulging forearms at the end. It was good.

Felt like I smashed the WOD too.  When I saw the times for the other girls I wasn’t sure I’d be able to finish at Rx weight but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be – was much harder in my head at least.  I think just breaking it down and minimizing rest breaks really helped me.  As did working between Jeremy and Anton as they both started out really strong and I felt like I was chasing them a bit.  Thankfully my DU’s kept me going strong throughout.

Mobility and Other Stuff

After the WOD I did some serious mobility on my quads again.  Really rolled them out from all angles especially my IT bands.  I did one leg then sat up and chatted with Sandy.  I made a comment that my legs felt weird because one was rolled out and the other wasn’t but that it was so painful I was avoiding the second one.  I eventually did it and am glad that I did.  It feels good afterward and they are loosening up a bit.

Anton was also doing some damage control on his torn hands from the t2b and I told him to cut off the flappy skin on his hand and he joked – ‘want to do it for me?’ which I found funny given that I’d done the exact same thing for Cam last week, it really doesn’t bother me or disgust me in any way.  Well, funny thing was… he actually did need my help because of the wonky scissors and angle of cutting – he trusted me enough to do it too.   So, a bit of surgery done on another Crossfitter post WOD, the things we will do for each other.  Ha!  I think it’s all my time spent playing sports growing up and now this because I really don’t have issues with things like this – blisters or gashes or having a teammate stick their finger in your eye to get a bug out on the football field.  You just do what is necessary, no biggie.  We are all just human afterall, made up of the same stuff.

It was a really good day.  I needed the WOD and the heavy KB was actually good for me and helped me put some stuff in perspective that at the end of it all turned out to be not as bad as I’d made it up in my head.  Purged that negativity through sweat – at least somewhat.  Back at it tonight and hopefully it will be a bit easier given that it’s cooled down today to a high of (only) 27°C (funny that there is a ‘heatwave’ at my parents place and it’s ‘only’ -1°C)

12/28 - So (expletive) hot...

I felt nauseous before this WOD ever began... the box was sauna like and the noon WOD was definitely not the brightest idea I've ever had.  I was in full on sweat mode before the warm-up even started.  Not cool.

After we'd done some shoulder mobilisation - actually while most were still doing this and I had given up on it I grabbed a bar and set up right in front of the fan.  Yup, I was that jerk.  I'm also Canadian and it was freaking hot - yup, I'll use that excuse too.  The WOD looked mean just written on the board... I knew it would be.  And so I present it to you (mostly) in photos...

My reaction to the WOD...

WOD
AMRAP 15
Min 1-5 Power Snatch (30/45kg)
Min 5-10 Clean & Press
Min 10-15 Thrusters Front Squats
Every min 4 Burpee bar hops
99 reps Rx.5

After the cleans my shoulder wasn't exactly happy so I did front squats instead of thrusters. Probably shouldn't have done the presses either but... ego.

Nick and I before the WOD even started... and then somewhere in the middle Andy and Sarah (I think)... or at least at some point but there is photo evidence of that below...

It was awesome having Nick beside me... after the first 5 minutes and 40 power snatches (love!) we were both struggling... a few times I heard him telling me to just pick up the bar - it was motivation for us both and when I moved to the bar from his comments he did the same... it was definitely team work.  There was even a high five in there at some point as we both tried to catch our breath from the burpees before getting back to the bar.  Mid WOD motivation at it's finest...

The burpees sucked, and I like burpees (mostly) these days.

Not a single person uttered these words today...

Or these ones (too hot)...

But these... oh yes, definitely a defining statement of the day...

Mostly because of Bec and her awesome forward thinking... and an inflatable pool...

The Cooee Spa open for sweating post-WOD treatments...

Just missing Bec in this shot.  Big thanks to Bec for bringing the pool by and her (apparent) blowing up skills and Tim for um, supervising? Also to Andy for keeping us all entertained, there was definitely some ab work through all that laughter - back, crack and sac wax anyone?  Oh, and to the rest who decided to comment, yes the water was truly disgusting after we'd all sat in it for over an hour - our hands were all de-calloused and yes, there were bits of skin floating around.  Was it worth it though given the temperature, sauna like workout and burning concrete, definitely.

10/31 - Happy Birthday Tim and Jack! Oh, and burpees...

First off – Happy 21st Birthday Tim and Jack… Halloween twins – and finally legal in all(?) of the world.
Coach Match had programmed the day for them though when looking at the board I laughed at the ‘Jack’ WOD as it’s the one that he always gives me when I go on vacation, but we’ll get to that.

Warm-up
Forward, backward, sides and grapevines across the box – 5 or so times each (there and back)
Walking lunges/ bear crawl across room
Partner sprints (with resistant bands)
I partnered with Kayla for the sprints and it’s pretty amusing – takes everything I have to (barely) hold her back and she can (if she wants to) keep me entirely from moving at all.  It definitely makes me work hard in both directions though.  As a note – while I don’t have this as part of the warm up I don’t see the need to do it every.single.day – or at least three straight days.  Alas.

Tim & Jack's 21st Birthday WODs!

TIM - 10-10-10 barbell walking lunges
40kg-40kg-40kg

Let’s talk about Tim…  Tim loves walking lunges and he is a beast when he does them (100kg).  They are really good however for really hurting everything.  We did these last week and it took most people several days to recover from them – I started at 20kg and then jumped to 40kg for three sets.  Kayla and Jeremy went up from 40 which was awesome but I just didn’t have it in me.  Need to start working on getting stronger/ going heavier in my lower body now.  These went fairly quickly and I think most of us were really just focused on the main attraction which was coming up next.

JACK - 100 burpees for time
6:04 (PR)

Let’s go back to earlier in the day here…  everyone at the box obviously do the same workout throughout the day and it seems that this week with many PR’s set on Monday  and the love of the WOD yesterday that there was a lot of extra posting on facebook so there was no way not to know the WOD in advance.  I give huge credit though to those that did hear about what it was and still decided to show up – I mean 100 burpees? There really isn’t much fun in it is there?

So, I’ve done this WOD now 4 times and my time keeps dropping, significantly this time too.

November 20, 2011 – 11:06
January 1, 2012 – 9:03
September 3, 2012 – 7:29
October 31, 2012 – 6:04 (PR)

It wasn’t that long ago that I did this, just about two months in fact though last time it was a choice I actually made – pick something from the PR board and do it – Stimo and I chose burpees (yes, we are insane) especially after doing Fran as a ‘warm-up’.  My time then was solid and a huge improvement so I wasn’t too sure how much I could shave off of that but knew that aiming for 17 a minute was reasonable (this would be about six minutes) though wasn’t sure I could sustain it.  I did 50 straight the first set, I just kept moving and I think I had somewhere between 20-25 in the first minute (though new that this pace wasn’t at all sustainable).  At 50 reps I got serious, the shirt came off (overheating) and that’s when Coach Match asked how many I had done – I was half way and close to about 3 minutes in.  In my head I also knew this was where the pain would really start – the first 50 go quick enough but as you near halfway they start to get really hard and you still have to do it again.  I accepted this – accepted it really right from the start and just started eating through the second half – I was counting in sets of 5 but going for 10 and then I’d take a quick breath and keep moving.  I just didn’t want to stop and kept telling myself that if I kept going they’d be over sooner because there really is no recovering in the middle, no matter how long you stop and breath the next rep is still going to suck just as much so might as well get it over with.  I know, I’m inspirational.  Ha.

I really wanted to crack 6 minutes on this one and gave it my best effort but just missed.  That being said I definitely did not leave anything in the tank.  I collapsed on the floor to recover and even after a bit when I tried to sit up to cheer on those still going I couldn’t, back to the floor it was.  Eventually after a full minute of recovery I got up but as I cheered Jeremy on for his last 10 reps I still had to take a knee, that WOD took everything out of me, it was good and even better once it was over.  I know I’ll do it again but I need to let my mind forget about just how hard it was, especially as I aim to crack 6 minutes then.

As a note, when we did the 7 minute AMRAP of burpees for the Crossfit Games Open #1 I got 81 reps.  If I were to repeat this now I’d break 100 and I’m astonished by the improvement in just under a year.  I love that Crossfit is making me into this person that is so much more capable than I ever was before.

Burpees, not something I hate anymore...
