9/23 – Smashed it…

What better way to get back into this little blog then by smashing a WOD, a much needed (non-competitive) win.  It was one of those days.

And also, when friends note how they still check this space it’s a good reminder that you enjoy writing and to get back at it (thanks Mike J.)

So… here we go.  Ready?

First let’s talk about how I’m kind of broken right now… I dealt with my nagging shoulder issues for months now and never bothered to do anything about it mostly because I hate stopping and I know that the only real solution is rest – complete and utter rest – and an abusive relationship with my physio but that’s another story (love you Andrew).

Spent the morning getting needled and swearing out loud (see, not a positive relationship at all) and having a dead achy shoulder all day long.  I knew that I’d be subbing in the WOD.

Strength
3-3-3
Strict press
17.5-15-16-17.5(2)

Minh and I were both down a shoulder so we were instructed to do one arm dumbbell presses.  It worked well though 17.5 was really hard (I did it in the warmup time just to see if I could) then 15kg was pretty easy so I switched to 16kg KB for the last set then gave 17.5kg a go again just to see if I could (I couldn’t – the second rep even was crap) – still made it work.

WOD
21-15-9
Chest to overhead (60/42.5)
Deadlift (60/42.5)
200m run
6:16 (15kg DB/ Rx/ Rx)

Again, used a db for the WOD and did all one arm chest to overhead.  The 15kg was a solid weight even though I managed to go unbroken throughout it was still a struggle physically though my mental strength got me through (especially when I saw others putting the bar down).  The deadlifts were good, not too heavy but still taxing.  Had to keep reminding myself to breath.  And the runs were good – 200m isn’t a bad distance.  It wasn’t far enough for the fast boys just behind me to catch up so I managed to win the heat – and while I know it’s not a competition it was just one of those days where I needed the win personally.  It was a shit day and I felt strong and solid and gave everything in that wod and it paid off.

Thankfully too it stopped raining between the start of class and the WOD otherwise we would have had to row (and I would have had 50 DU’s to do instead – though that might have been fun too).

Also, the final inspiration of this post was to note how my words were used against me last night – and it was a good thing.  I think it might have been when I was trying the 17.5kg db again at the end that I said ‘I can’t do it for three’ and Mingh turned to me and said ‘you’ve already talked yourself out of it, there’s no way you’ll do it now’ and I had to change my mindset before picking it up.  He has a point, it makes a HUGE difference – believe in ourselves and though it’s easy to forget sometimes in the moment it was a reminder I needed.  I think it also helped me during the WOD to push through my perceived mental barriers and keep grinding out the remaining reps each set rather than resting.  Thanks Minh.

12/28 - So (expletive) hot...

I felt nauseous before this WOD ever began... the box was sauna like and the noon WOD was definitely not the brightest idea I've ever had.  I was in full on sweat mode before the warm-up even started.  Not cool.

After we'd done some shoulder mobilisation - actually while most were still doing this and I had given up on it I grabbed a bar and set up right in front of the fan.  Yup, I was that jerk.  I'm also Canadian and it was freaking hot - yup, I'll use that excuse too.  The WOD looked mean just written on the board... I knew it would be.  And so I present it to you (mostly) in photos...

My reaction to the WOD...

WOD
AMRAP 15
Min 1-5 Power Snatch (30/45kg)
Min 5-10 Clean & Press
Min 10-15 Thrusters Front Squats
Every min 4 Burpee bar hops
99 reps Rx.5

After the cleans my shoulder wasn't exactly happy so I did front squats instead of thrusters. Probably shouldn't have done the presses either but... ego.

Nick and I before the WOD even started... and then somewhere in the middle Andy and Sarah (I think)... or at least at some point but there is photo evidence of that below...

It was awesome having Nick beside me... after the first 5 minutes and 40 power snatches (love!) we were both struggling... a few times I heard him telling me to just pick up the bar - it was motivation for us both and when I moved to the bar from his comments he did the same... it was definitely team work.  There was even a high five in there at some point as we both tried to catch our breath from the burpees before getting back to the bar.  Mid WOD motivation at it's finest...

The burpees sucked, and I like burpees (mostly) these days.

Not a single person uttered these words today...

Or these ones (too hot)...

But these... oh yes, definitely a defining statement of the day...

Mostly because of Bec and her awesome forward thinking... and an inflatable pool...

The Cooee Spa open for sweating post-WOD treatments...

Just missing Bec in this shot.  Big thanks to Bec for bringing the pool by and her (apparent) blowing up skills and Tim for um, supervising? Also to Andy for keeping us all entertained, there was definitely some ab work through all that laughter - back, crack and sac wax anyone?  Oh, and to the rest who decided to comment, yes the water was truly disgusting after we'd all sat in it for over an hour - our hands were all de-calloused and yes, there were bits of skin floating around.  Was it worth it though given the temperature, sauna like workout and burning concrete, definitely.

Friday Funnies...

For my boys Tim and MikeJ...  apparently they show up to this little blog specifically for the funnies and I don't want to let them down so here's a last minute edition for them.

Think I posted this before - still makes me laugh

Just change 2011 to 2012...

Definitely blazing heat here these past few days...

About right...

Remember to hydrate...

6/19 - Ab day...

Today was most definitely an ab day - did a bit of mobility when I got to the box early mostly on my glutes as my legs were really tight.  I don't know if it's from Sunday and the beach run and squats or if it was from the (light) deadlifts and (few) OHS last night.  I don't know where it came from but they were quite sore.

I jumped into the noon session today too which was fun - different bunch and therefore different energy that I quite enjoy.  Need to take advantage of these now since when I start my new job I likely won't be able to make any.

Skills
Tabata hollow body hold
Accumulate 30 hollow body rocks
5 x 10 beat kicks on the pull-up bar

Hollow body holds hurt a lot after the first half though Coach Match was all over me getting me to straighten out my legs when they'd start to bend.  I suck at the hollow body rocks, I definitely need to practice these.  The beat kicks were fun/ easy however they hurt my hands and although the first set I got 10 straight the rest were done in sets of 5 or so...

WOD
12 min AMRAP -
10 box jumps
15 sit-ups
20 double-unders
25 sec hollow body hold
6/24 24" box

I quite enjoyed this one though it was a definite killer on the abs.  I was steady on the box jumps rebounding on almost all of them throughout.  The sit ups were steady and 15 was definitely enough.  The first few rounds I struggled on the DU's, not sure why but from then on I was solid and managed to go unbroken.  The hollow body holds were fine though when I started the first one it took me a few seconds to realize that the clock was counting down and not up and therefore the math was slightly more complicated in my head - that being said at the start of each round it gave me something to concentrate on for a few seconds rather than just focusing on the agony in my abs.  Ha!

Mike tried to get me to do 4 consecutive strict pull-ups afterwards convinced I could do it and I got 2 and even they were tough.  I was definitely feeling tired in my shoulders after 'Diane' and yesterdays 36 pull-ups.  Oh well... still happy to get 2 as that's a step in the right direction.
